Editing & Writing Coaching Services

“Research is writing. Writing is research.”

~Jo Van Every

Developmental Editing

You have an idea and an argument, but want help tacking back and forth between the big picture and the data. Developmental editing (AKA substantive editing) can help you create a compelling argument for your readers to follow. Part coaching, part analysis, this is great if you are considering submitting a manuscript for peer (or committee) review. Think of me as the really good academic reviewer you deserve.

Copy Editing

You’ve done it! Your thesis, dissertation, chapter, or journal article has been accepted! Now you’re left to deal with the “nuts and bolts” of finalizing that massive piece of writing to meet the journal’s style guide, the publisher’s specifications, or the university’s requirements instead of getting on with your life. I’ve been there. I can help.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Editing

Writing arguments in English is tricky for a native speaker; the difficulties are even more complicated for English as a Second Language (ESL) authors. I have worked with authors whose native languages are as disparate as German and Arabic, and am experienced in helping ESL authors communicate their ideas in compelling and efficient ways.

My goal as your writing coach is to provide you with skills, community, and practices that will help you to draft manuscripts; request, receive, and provide feedback effectively; and submit projects on time and with confidence.

Strategy Consultation

Unsure where to go next with your writing? Considering venues for publication? You may want a strategy consultation to clear out some cobwebs and get started. Think of this as an opportunity to evaluate your writing options.

One-on-One Coaching

There is a lot going on in the world right now, and a lot going on in your world in particular. Maybe you know what direction(s) to head in, but can’t figure out the first steps. Or maybe you know the first steps, but can’t seem to take them. Let’s try something a little different.

Small-group Skill-building

Academic writing can feel like standing at a cliff’s edge and shouting research ideas into a void: if you’re lucky you’ll get a response, but it may not be edifying. I work with small groups of academics to help them build resilient communities across disciplinary boundaries, no matter what their individual writing projects. For curated groups of 4 to 10, weekly or fortnightly.
